The Google aggregate star rating is still a strong, fast signal of overall satisfaction, so it carries nearly as much weight as sentiment. It's the number most families check first, and it reflects the accumulated judgment of everyone who left a review, not just the recent ones we analyse for sentiment.

Volume, 20%

A centre with 4 reviews and a centre with 240 reviews shouldn't be treated as equally certain, even if both average the same star rating. We log-scale review volume so that going from 5 to 50 reviews matters a lot, while going from 300 to 350 barely moves the needle. This stops a handful of reviews from a small centre outweighing a genuinely large track record.

Recency, 11%

Childcare centres change: new directors, new staff, renovated rooms, new ownership. A glowing review from four years ago tells you less than one from last month. Recency weighting nudges the score toward what's happening at the centre now, not what it was doing years back.

Completeness, 15%

We check whether a business lists a working phone number, a website, current hours and a full address. This isn't a measure of quality of care, but it is a real, practical signal: a centre that keeps its basic listing information accurate and available is easier to enrol with and easier to trust at a glance.

Where the score has honest limits

Businesses with few recent reviews produce a less certain score, however the star rating and sentiment look. We label these as low-confidence rather than quietly rounding them up the list. If a centre has barely any recent review activity, treat the score as a starting point for your own research, not a final verdict.

We also don't independently inspect classrooms, staffing ratios or licensing files. The score reflects what's publicly reviewable: what families say, how they rate their experience, and how well the business maintains its public information. It's a research aid, not a substitute for a centre visit.
